Badge Press: Reclaiming Pejorative Labels through Design26/06/24

Created during a press workshop inspired by the Women in Revolt! exhibition at Tate Britain, this project explores the intersection of art, activism, and feminist discourse. Focusing on the power of language, I investigated how pejorative terms for women have historically been used to police behaviour, enforce societal norms, and suppress female empowerment.

Through this project, I questioned: Can these derogatory labels be reinterpreted and transformed into symbols of defiance and pride? By delving into the deeper historical and cultural contexts behind these terms, I aimed to reclaim their meaning and present them as badges of honour.

The final outcome includes a series of four badges, each representing a different reclaimed pejorative term. These badges are accompanied by a zine and poster that unpack the significance of each word, tracing their roots in misogyny while highlighting the growing movement to subvert and redefine them.

This project merges visual design with social commentary, using accessible mediums to spark dialogue around gender, language, and empowerment.
